‘Be My End’ by Creeper [Song Review]

I’m a huge fan of bands who channel older musical sounds in their music. It’s a way of bringing in some of the fun and innocents that music used to have while incorporating a lot of the progression that has taken place this century.

Creeper is one of those bands that I only heard about in the last year but have quickly become a band I look forward to hearing new stuff from. I love a band with a strong aesthetic and a flare for the dramatic that also has the talent to prove they belong on a stage.

Bringing Back the Croon

One of the things about Creeper that I always enjoyed was the way Will Gould has this crooning register when singing a lot of the less intense parts of their songs but can then go into this very bright and slang-y register when the intensity of the vocals calls for it. This is something that not a whole lot of contemporary singers do. The crooning style isn’t something that is used frequently unless you’re trying to fit into a jazzier sound. To then mix that sound with something that has more of a rock/alternative feel to it is a strange match-up–but in a really compelling way.

There’s also a very prominent older rock feel to this song and to then add in vocals that also pull from an older style really pulls together this song’s overall sound, which is basically this non-stop rush forward.

Tumbling Through Life

Listening to the instrumentals specifically with this song, I found that it had a very forward momentum to it and a very full sound that kind of pushed the listener through the story of the song, which I think nicely symbolizes how the narrator of the song feels about the relationship they are talking about. It’s not so much that they want this person to be there and therefore “be [their] end”, but more that they are being pulled along by the momentum of this person and the way that they feel about them that there’s not a lot of time to think about what they’re crashing through.

It’s possible to feel very strongly for a person and want to have that person in your life but also feel overwhelmed by the experience and I think that that’s what this song is really trying to get at. Feeling like this person is going to be your end because the experience of caring about them is so overwhelming.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Overall I think that this song is just a bop.

I thought about doing some of the older songs that I’ve heard from Creeper but this song being newer–and also just a really fun sounding song–made me want to focus on this one.

I think that feelings of being overwhelmed by one’s experience is something that we can all empathize with at this point but I think it’s also important to acknowledge the fun and almost childish glee the song also has. Just because something is overwhelming doesn’t mean that it is all bad (which is something that I can see easily when I’m not feeling overwhelmed but it’s something that I definitely have trouble acknowledging when I’m in the thick of it). Having a good time, even just for a little while, is possible even when it can feel like the end of everything.
